Find answers regarding SANWIT membership, sub-sectors, and operational governance.

General & Governance

What is SANWIT?

The South African Network for Women in Transport (SANWIT) is a non-profit umbrella organisation operating in association with the Department of Transport (DoT). It serves as the official platform to empower, connect, and advocate for female entrepreneurs and professionals across all transport sub-sectors in South Africa.

Is SANWIT a government department?

No. SANWIT is an independent non-profit network, but it maintains an institutional relationship with the National Department of Transport and Provincial Departments to implement Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) charters and gender transformation policies.

What sub-sectors does SANWIT cover?

SANWIT supports female-owned businesses and professionals across five key areas:

  • Road: Bus, taxi, haulage, cross-border freight, and commuter services.
  • Rail: Rolling stock maintenance, track infrastructure, and supply chain logistics.
  • Maritime: Port operations, marine services, shipping, and freight forwarding.
  • Aviation: Ground handling, airport logistics, and commercial services.
  • Downstream Value Chain: Fuel retail, mechanical services, tire manufacturing, and spares.

Membership & Registration

Who is eligible to join SANWIT?

Membership is open to all female entrepreneurs, emerging business owners, and female professionals in South Africa who are operating within or seeking entry into the transport industry.

What are the membership categories?
  • Ordinary Members: Individual female operators and SMMEs.
  • Affiliate Members: Formations representing specific sub-sectors (e.g., Women in Aviation, Women in Maritime).
  • Associate Members: Strategic corporate partners, state-owned companies, and government entities.
What documents do I need to register?

Standard onboarding requires:

  1. Valid South African ID / Passport.
  2. CIPC Business Registration Documents (CoCOR/CK).
  3. Central Supplier Database (CSD) Registration Number.
  4. Valid Tax Clearance / SARS PIN.
  5. Proof of business address and active sub-sector licensing (where applicable).

Funding & Growth

Does SANWIT directly provide business loans or grants?

No. SANWIT does not act as a direct financial institution. Instead, it facilitates access to finance by negotiating ring-fenced funding pools and reduced collateral requirements with development finance institutions (e.g., NEF, SEFA, IDC).

How does SANWIT help my business secure government tenders?

SANWIT advocates for ring-fenced procurement set-asides for women-owned enterprises across state-owned enterprises (such as Transnet, PRASA, and SAMSA) and municipal transport infrastructure projects.

Does SANWIT offer training and mentorship?

Yes. Through partnerships with the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) and industry stakeholders, members gain access to capacity building, business management training, and operational compliance workshops.
